After many attempts to boot, suddenly gnome-shell 3.38.1 finally worked. I can't put my finger on what I did.
Even after it started working, there was a boot that failed. But currently it is booting normally.

I had manually built and installed gnome-shell and mutter a while ago (hacking on an aspect of g-s), so possibly my situation was caused by this?

I cannot reproduce the issue with an up-to-date (29th-Nov-2020) system.
