Do you have python-importlib-metadata or python-setuptools installed?

no, this is just a small backup server.

[root@BackupMachine ~]# pacman -Q | grep python
python 3.8.5-1
python-pyelftools 0.26-1
python2 2.7.18-1
python2-pylibacl 0.5.4-2
python2-pyxattr 0.6.1-3

thanks for the hint anyway:

[root@BackupMachine ~]# pacman -S python-importlib-metadata
[root@BackupMachine ~]# rdiff-backup --version
rdiff-backup DEV
[root@BackupMachine ~]# pacman -S python-setuptools
[root@BackupMachine ~]# rdiff-backup --version
rdiff-backup 2.0.3

so, it seems there are just missing explicit dependencies. thanks again.

Fixed in 2.0.5-1. Also python-setuptools can be removed again in next release of rdiff-backup: https://github.com/rdiff-backup/rdiff-backup/commit/e5d1fc3d706315e80bb1a8b8b6960a827475408b
