The default mirror lists (/etc/pacman.d/*) should be updated for North American mirrors:

1/ ftp.archlinux.org should not be on this list any longer since decision was taken to throttle it. At least it should not be the first (and therefore default) one.

2/ http://www2.cddc.vt.edu/linux/distributions/archlinux/extra/os/i686 has not been updated since May 2, 2006. Is it still valid?

3/ No connexion can be established with ftp://mirror.cs.vt.edu/pub/ArchLinux/extra/os/i686. Again, is it still valid?

That only makes two usable mirrors for North America. Is it enough?

About 1st - we should not remove ftp.archlinux.org from the first place, because otherwise users who didn't read installation notice and didn't use rankmirrors will flood the first Nort American mirror in the list :-P And because mirrors don't have throttling, those users won't feel like they need to use rankmirrors.

So, with ftp.archlinux.org at the top users are almost forced to use rankmirrors. :P

1. I agree with Roman.

2. It isn't in the default mirrorlist anymore, that is the best we can do.

3. I believe it is still valid, it may be due to overload.

According to posts on the forums, more North American mirrors may be on the way. We will add these as they become available.

Thank you both.

1. I never read that rankmirrors was "mandatory". And if this is a feature, why not implement it properly :
- mirror selection and/or rankmirrors should be a mandatory step in the arch install cd. Like in many distros.
- and for those who installed arch long ago, at the time where intallation documentation did not talk about this, pacman should display a message if ftp.archlinux.org is the mirror used.
2. ok.
3. I did try several times this week and some months ago. Never been able to connect to this server.

We don't ever make things mandatory. That would violate KISS.

However, upon installation of pacman 3, all users will see a message recommending they run rankmirrors. Rankmirrors was not available prior to this release (a sortmirrors script was, but it often did nasty things to your mirrorlist).

It would be nice to incorporate into the installer, this should be another feature request IF there is not one already.

I like KISS and this is why I use Arch but:

1. in Roman's comment I read "users are almost forced to use rankmirrors" Hmm, mandatory, forced, what's the difference?

2. then stop providing artwork for any package. That's wasted time for the developpers.
Comment by Roman Kyrylych (Romashka) - Thursday, 29 March 2007, 23:04 GMT
1: "forced" by conditions - low download speed from ftp.archlinux.org
2: Arch artwork is provided only with few packages (i.e. KDE has Arch splash, Gnome doen't, Xfce - yes but it's not default).

So:
1 - Won't Implement
2 - Fixed
3 - Requires Testing
:P
Please no OT here.
