You probably already heard of Solid, the KDE 4 hardware backend. In order to support that in Arch, we need to decide between two possible solutions:

1) Switch over to NetworkManager. There is already a package for it and I'm using it for a longer time already. It works fine.
2) Provide a Solid backend for the network part. Since we are using another network configuration as almost every other dist, that means we need to develop such a backend by our own.

This job is not really urgent, but we need to think about it as soon as possible. I'm at your service as a KDE developer for future questions;)

Just curious, what will be the effect of using the Network Manager on users who don't use KDE? For example, how will this affect a XFCE/IceWM/anything-else user?

I know that Gnome for example does also provide a interface for networkmanager. No idea about others...

KDE has Knetworkmanager.

As it is, I don't see any need to do anything yet. If people want to use wireless in KDE we already have networkmanager.

If someone wants to contribute an Arch specific backend to solid, they're free to.
