gtkam seems to require the package gphoto2 for much of its functionality, not just libgphoto2. For instance, I was unable to download photos from my Canon SD900 (although browsing and viewing was fine) until I installed the package gphoto2. Currently, the only listed dependencies for gtkam are libbonoboui, libgnomeui, and libgphoto2. Not sure if this was intentional, it seems like a simple oversight to me. Hope this helps.

$ uname -m
x86_64

$ pacman -Q libgphoto2 gtkam gphoto2
libgphoto2 2.4.0-0
gtkam 0.1.14-1
error: package "gphoto2" not found

The updated packages are just the ABS PKGBUILDs with new pkgver and md5sums. gtkam is working fine with my camera (Canon Digital Ixus 70), both viewing and downloading is working without having gphoto2 installed. Might resolve itself with an updated package.
