I'm not sure is related, or a separate bug, but after upgrading to Mesa 20, I can consistently hard lock my 5700 XT system by browsing to Google Maps in Firefox, and "aggressively" zooming in and outs. Additionally hardware video decoding in Firefox crashes the tab that attempted to play video.

After downgrading to 19.3.4, both issues go away.

I haven't been able to obtain any logs when the system hard locks, but here are the logs from the video tab crashes:

I've experienced now as well a lot of crashes on Mesa 20.0-4 on my Radeon VII. So far this card was extremely stable in Mesa and it regressed quite a lot. Using Firefox with Webrender is enough to crash my system from time to time. I will try mesa-git now to see if it makes a difference.

@jrb I have a 5700XT and I've been having the exact same issue. The system completely freezes. with no logs whatsoever.
The only thing I know thus far is that it only happens when picom is running and is using the "glx" backend.
The hard-lock occurs within the first 5-30 mins after starting xorg.
I've been testing stuff for 2 days now. Yesterday I disabled picom and I experienced no freezes after running my system for +12 hours doing all kinds of different things.
Today. I tried to run picom with the "xrender" backend and it had no issues too.
So what I can confirm (at least for me) is that it only happens when picom is running and is using the "glx" backend.

What I've tried.
kernels: linux, linux-lts, linux-mainline
mesa: mesa, mesa-git

I believe I was experiencing either this or a similar issue with my R9 280. I would experience a screen freeze shortly after starting X, and then my machine would crash and reboot. Downgrading to mesa 19.3.4 fixed the issue on the R9 280, and I am now running an RX 5600XT with mesa 20.1.1 with no issues. Running picom with the default backend, which seems to be xrender.

Is this still an issue with the 5.8 kernel series and latest mesa?
