To summarize quickly, french customers of the www.free.fr ISP can use what this ISP calls the "Freeplayer"[1] which is using VLC to stream movies/music/etc... to the TV set connected to the "Freebox" (see wikipedia link above).

Currently the Freeplayer is simply not working because VLC needs to be built against the "twolame" library. I've recently added the twolame package in the AUR[2]. Once that package is built/installed the only changes to make to VLC's PKGBUILD are:
1) Add a "twolame" dependency within the depends() field
2) Append the --enable-twolame switch to the ./configure script

Note: VLC can also be built with twolame statically linked by using the following switch: --with-twolame-tree=PATH

Thanks.

Additional comments about closing:  By author's request: "Well... I suggest you close this feature request. I'll reconsider it once VLC 0.9 is out. I personally found a way to avoid using this so I don't really need it anymore. And since there were not that much comments on this entry since almost 1 year.... So, please, close this report."

Is this a strict dependency? If twolame will be added to makedepends only (+ post_install message) won't VLC complain about missing library during start?
vlc has many dependencies already that I'm not sure that all of them are strict (non-optional).

I'm not sure whether this is a strict dependency or not. I won't be able to do more tests until 2 or 3 days so, if you wish, I'll try what you suggest and post a new comment here to give the results.

As I say, there's a way to link twolame statically but this will surely result in a larger package and I can understand this solution may not be the best one since many users will probably never use that feature.

Ok, I've made some tests and it looks like removing twolame doesn't prevent VLC to start/work. Hope this answers your question.

Tobias, do you want to implement this?
Comment by Tobias Kieslich (tobias) - Monday, 11 February 2008, 22:24 GMT
i know this almost a year, but I am hesitant about adding any features to vlc. People just rebuild it for their needs and it seems fine, but with all the stuff going on, such as wx incompatibilities, now the ffmpeg issue that seems to be addressed only in the 0.9 dev branch etc vlc is one of the most unstable and unreliable software I maintain and it breaks basically every month doe to some other package update. I will reconsider stuff when 0.9 is out and the guys are on a somewhat stable codebase. But for now, nope, sorry guys. VLC is too much of a timesuck.
