Description:

Classic drop down menus will always jump to the upper left corner of the window after a few seconds while trying to select. The attached screenshot (after right clicking an itme) is from evolution but it is not limited to evolution. This seems to happen only with gnome applications and dropdown menus from the menubar or right click menus. firefox for example does not show this behaviour. Also gnome-calendar (3.36.0-1) does not show this behaviour for the hamburger menu. However a webapplication running in the gnome browser shows this behaviour but not if run in firefox.

The dropdown menu works it is just super annoying that it jumps away while you try to click. Once it is in the upper left corner you cen select what ever you want.

Additional info:
* package version(s)

Nit sure which one is relevant as this most likely in some library

gnome-*3.36
evolution-3.36.0-1
epiphany-3.36.0-1

this began right after the update to 3.36

Steps to reproduce:

upgrade to gnome* 3.36 open a drop down menu from the menubar or right click to get a menu in a gnome application

Same problem here, I've also noticed a general unresponsiveness on nautilus after opening the dropdown menu a couple of times, all this on wayland.
On Xorg everything works fine, so it's probably something wayland related

Works for me.

OK, I think I may have figured this one out.

In Gnome Tweaks, there is a setting in the 'Windows' section called 'Window Focus'. It has three possible settings. When I select the top one 'Click to Focus', everything works as it should - probably the setting heftig is using. However, if I select any of the other two settings, then the dropdown menues start jumping around and generally misbehaving. This can be tested right on that panel with the 'Window Action Key' selector.

Could you guys try that out and then help me figure out where exactly to file the upstream bug report?

Confirm, it's because of the Focus on Hover, but affect only wayland in my case, can you confirm?

I use wayland and have actually compiled xorg out of my setup, so cannot easily test that, sorry...

OK, upstream is already aware of it and apparently there is a fix - see

There's an already open issue, it has also been fixed and there's a pull request, so it's just a matter of time until we get the update!
