Description:

Latex package animate.sty {version 2019/08/20} shipped with texlive-latexextra 2019.52575-1 is broken for xelatex (works fine with pdflatex). Using xetex engine, it's not possible to embed animations at least when using png frames.
Updating animate.sty with the latest upstream from CTAN {version 2019/12/03} [cfr https://ctan.org/pkg/animate] fixes the problem.

Arch's version uses an outdated engine testing, which fails for xelatex. Upstream this was fixed with:
