Hi,
I recently installed rhythmbox, with the gstreamer0.10-mad plugin, and was unable to play mp3 files. the error message shown when clicking the "properties" of the file were
---> Could not open resource for writing.
After I installed the gstreamer0.10-alsa package, rhythmbox was able to play the music without problems.
I have verified this by removing the gstreamer0.10-alsa package, and rhythmbox does not play files without it.

gstreamer0.10-alsa is not a strict dependency, because you can use other backends, i.e. gstreamer0.10-esd.
