As discussed lately on Arch Conf as well as over IRC, we could not find an actual use of gettext.

Unless there is something actually using it (in which case it should likely be added as a dependency to it), we should consider removing it from base.
This task depends upon

Well... at least makepkg uses it for translations.

And it's already part of base-devel. Should be a dep/optional dep in the pacman package, too.

It should be a dep of pacman. At the next pacman release, I'm going to add all the real deps for pacman & makepkg to the package, which will bring many useful things to the base group...

I think optional would make more sense if they're just for makepkg. A lot of people never run makepkg on their actual install.

More importantly, makepkg just prints untranslated strings without gettext, it's fully functional aside from the lack of translations, I don't see how that could justify an hard dep.

i dont think hard-depending on everything and the kitchen sink is a good solution for the pacman package with the excuse of makepkg requiring it.
makepkg usage itself expects base-devel presence anyway, so adding all makepkg depends as hard depends to the pacman package is imo just artificially undermining the efforts and discussions around the base package.

I am actually thinking makepkg could become a separate package, part of base devel instead of base since anyway anyone using makepkg will need base-devel anyway. Gettext pull icu which 4th biggest packages in base. Remove this and perl could shave 20% out the size of base.
