During the initial discussion about this, I seem to recall we agreed to strip out most networking tools, but left in the requirement for /usr/bin/ping and /usr/bin/ip as those are pretty basic and it may be pretty difficult to be useful without them.

OTOH it's not like we have netctl there...

Thoughts? I wish this had seen more discussion months ago, though. :(

Well, this is what those bugs are about: discussion.

I don’t use ping for one (when I need to debug network connectivity issue, I rather use mtr). ip for sure, but I that’s because I need network.

If we consider base as the minimum set of packages which must be on a system, we should get ride of packages that someone may be allowed to remove.
ip and ping are network tooling useless on systems without network (or where the network is defined outside).

Moreover, they are neither POSIX[1] nor LSB5[2] commands.

There are other ping utils (as Bruno pointed out, there's mtr) and "ping" pulls in a lot of other utils, such ninfod, rarpd and tftpd, which I don't believe are super useful. If the "ping" command could be separated, it would be better, otherwise I agree to remove it from base.
