the xfvm4-themes package installs the themes in /opt/xfce4/share/themes while xfce looks for them in /usr/share/themes

I know, but that works fine for me. can you please post the output of the following commands:
echo $XDG_DATA_DIRS
echo $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS

[gnarlie@kompak ~]$ echo $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS
/etc/xdg:/opt/gnome/etc/xdg:/opt/xfce4/etc/xdg

I probably messed up somewhere but I only got it working after creating a symlink to /usr/share/themes

works for me too (upgraded 4.2 -> 4.4rc2 -> 4.4)
