I just switched from Xfce4-svn to Xfce 4.4 from extra, and the majority of my icons are missing. They're mostly Xfce-specific icons, such as volume control, half the icons in the settings menu, and the shutdown/reboot/log off buttons.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Reason for closing:  Fixed
Additional comments about closing:  with the move to /usr and the call of update-icon-cache that is solved

I too am having this issue. I actually did a fresh install of Archlinux, and the first thing I did was install the new Xfce-4.4. I noticed some icons were missing, so I installed Tango and Tango-extras, to no avail.

I then installed every icon theme I could find with pacman, still no luck.

Next I symlinked my icons directory in /opt/xfce4/share/ to /usr/share/icons/... still no dice.

I am missing icons in Terminal's settings as well. There are generally icons missing all over Xfce.

Another thing I noticed, I used to be able to type, for example, 'home' into the icon text box when adding a new panel icon, and it would link to folder_home, but this is no longer happening. If I type, 'chat', it doesn't link to 'internet-group-chat'. I have setup everything exactly the same as my Xfce-svn setup, except that I'm using Xfce-4.4.

I have been told to make sure the mirror I used was in sync. I used the ftp.archlinux.org mirror, for this very reason.

Does anyone have any ideas? This is extremely annoying, and makes my desktop look like utter crap. I'm tempted to switch back to Xfce-svn. :'(

I have attached a screenshot of my settings menu, my settings window, a terminal window, and my terminal settings.

I had the same issue with xfce-4.4rc2.
See bugs #5981 and #6065.
Does the change in .install described in #6065 helps? (I didn't have access to my xfce box to check this for long time)

First off: thanks guys, for fixing all my little mistakes :D

Secondly: an uninstall and reinstall of Xfce4 seems to have fixed the problem. During the reinstall of xfce4-icon-theme, it mentioned something about rebuilding its cache. It must have helped.

Good news! Somehow in my various ways of screwing around, I have managed to fix it. I reinstalled xfce4-icon-theme alone, but I guess that wasn't good enough.

I have the same issue that I can;t reproduce that since my boxes run on the pre-release stuff forever.

I've just updated xfce from rc2 to final and icons are fixed now. Only notes plugin doesn't have icon.
Anyone who have problem in _final_ Xfce 4.4 try to reinstall xfce4-icon-theme.

The problem is that a lot more packages than just xfce4-icon-theme need 'gtk-update-icon-cache -ft' in their .install file:

find /var/lib/pacman/local/ -name files | xargs grep -l /share/files/ | sort | less

Oops, that one: find /var/lib/pacman/local/ -name files | xargs grep -l /share/icons/ | sort | less
