Additional comments about closing: /etc/profile is required in order to set many things, including the system locale, the perl path, the jre path, and the recommended way of configuring the libreoffice or freetype environment -- and that is just on one person's system.
That forum thread was resolved two years ago by gnome deciding that it's worth starting a bash login shell.
