Without installing gtk2 on my system and trying to run nvidia-settings it fails to start complaining about missing libraries. ldd confirms the linking dep

having additional dependencies for a control panel while you're installing a videodriver is not wanted IMHO. Some people are allergic to libraries with a G in its name and don't use the control panel, while they do want to use the primary function of nvidia-utils: the display driver.
