I would like to request that again. AFAIK fam hasnt had a release since 2003 while gamin in 2008.
Also Gentoo recommends Gamin http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/gnome/faq.xml
Are the reasons for denying the request still valid? Fam seems to be unmaintained, dead and patched to death.
If i am wrong, feel free to close this again.

Flyspray does not keep the reason for closing when reopening bugs, so here it is for the referrence:
"gamin development is dead and doesn't work nice with NFS shares without polling all the time, while fam uses a remote instance of fam to do that. For the rest, many apps use inotify directly, which removes the need for a fam->inotify wrapper like gamin is."

AFAIK tpowa's comment here: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/4175#comment8599 isnt valid anymore.
Its pretty obvious that fam isnt maintained. gamin probably is, so the only reason to have fam instead of gamin is NFS. i dont know if thats valid today.
FWIW fedora seems to ship only gamin

When I last took gamin for a spin, NFS was still an issue. Also, I found it was not as good with thunar (though other people swear by it...)

I see no point in removing software just because it has not had a release. If fam was quite buggy, that might be a different issue... I see no current bug reports for it.

Also, gamin is in [community].
