Description:

pdfnup <pdf-filename> produces an error on any pdf file.

Here is the error (from the pdfTeX logs):

! pdfTeX error (\pdfsetmatrix): Unrecognized format..
\AtBegShi@Output ...ipout \box \AtBeginShipoutBox

It happens on shipout of the first page.

A similar error has been reported 2017 on debian and apparently been fixed in the meantime):

I could not reproduce this. Same texlive-core version here, and pdfnup behaves as it should (both with TeX from the Archlinux packages, and upstream tlmgr).

Make sure that nothing in your TeX path interfers with the internals of pdfnup, e. g. temporary move away your ~/.texlive .

The error message sounds like you might try to reinstall texlive-{core,bin} and/or rerun the post-transactional hooks at /usr/share/libalpm/scripts/texlive-*

Is upstream TeXLive from http://tug.org/texlive/quickinstall.html an option?
