Details

Currently avifile depends on qt. But Qt is needed only for apps that come with avifile, not the library itself.
And because avifile is used by other packages, it's not good to make them depend on qt.
For example, "Transcode is a video/DVD ripper and encoder for the terminal/console", but transcode package requires avifile which requires qt! Silly.

If split doesn't seem like a good solution, then qt dependency could be removed and message added to .install like "install qt to use apps1,2,3"

I can make it a makedepends instead. Splitting is a big too much imho

makedepends would be fine. You may echo some notice in post_install (like in case of nvidia-settings in nvidia package).

I looked into it and it's just plain bad!
avifile is a dead project and I started rebuilding transcode without avifile. I leave the current version in the repo since two other very old packages need the library but it's definitely fading. But there won't be another build of avifile from the current sources because it is just not worth it to fix it.
