Could we have VLC player with mozilla plugin? I was able to compile the plugin using this howto: http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/mozilla-plugin-compile.html

PKGBUILD attached
(application/octet-stream)    PKGBUILD (2.3 KiB)

Reason for closing:  Won't implement
Additional comments about closing:  after testing it a bit I must say that the other plugins are way more capable and vlc is not in their league yet. So until this isn't changed I see no need in dealing with the whole hassle.

NO, bad idea.
do not build vlc with the plugin, unless you can make it an separeted package. you do not want 3 different plugins for video with mozilla.

ok, let's make a separate package vlc-plugin which would only depend on vlc.

I wont build vlc anyway until I haven't found a way to build th new wxgtk _with_ gtk1 support which we still need for audacity. So far I can just get the gtk2 versions build(with and without unicode support) but gtk1 fails. After that we can try to get on this one. But please consider that it takes a long time to build vlc, to build it twice completely just for the separated plugin does not sound too good to me.

Thanks for the PKGBUILD. If it is not to be included in arch, it is at least good the ppl that need it can build it. There are files that neither mplayer-plugin or totem-plugin can handle and, besides, mplayer-plugin acts like a real bully - it tends to override other plugins, despite it cannot handle them :( mplayer-plugin is definitely thumbs down on my puters.

One more thing to be added is that you will need to copy over /var/abs/extra/multimedia/vlc/vlc.install and /var/abs/extra/multimedia/vlc/vlc.desktop to the directory containing the PKGBUILD before running makepkg. If you have seamonkey installed, you will also have to uninstall it before building the vlc-0.8.6 package. You can reinstall it afterwards.

Well, after trying vlc out a bit, I have to admit, that it is very beta. It cannot handle quicktime correctly and there is no sound for .mov files. It also crashes FF frequently. Mplayer-plugin doesn't get along with it either. But it might as well be firefox that is crappy.

I edited the PKGBUILD and installed 0.8.6a, which is a bit more secure than 0.8.6, but it did not resolve the sound and crash problems. It seems to be a common issue according to the folks on videolan.org.

So, I will continue with uninstalling and reinstalling mplayer-plugin when I need either vlc or mplayer. Anyway, it is better than nothing.

How did you guys get that build at all
I bails for me on the libfaad plugin

I got it from here. I too have come to the conclusion that it is faad2 that fails. Tried to compile faad2-2.5.tar.gz but keep getting the error:

Making package: faad2 2.5-1 (Fri Jan 19 22:10:41 CET 2007)

This is pretty annoying, but I am but a amateur and stobborn as hell - hehe. Maybe i need some faac, too - dunno really.

Also tried to install vlc-0.8.6a with the faad2-cvs from AUR, but with that version - no sound and frequent crashes.
