Additional info:
I believe this is a relevant message, it was introduced first boot with affected kernel:
arch kernel: rtsx_pci: probe of 0000:03:00.0 failed with error -110

Relevant topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1814888
Looks like linux-lts is also affected

downgrading kernel to any version between 4.18.10 (was in my cache) and 4.18.14 solves the issue, and upgrading to both 4.18.15 and 4.18.16 reintroduces the issue, that is why I did not post all other packages versions.

Is the issue present in 4.19.arch1-1 currently in testing?
Comment by Mathew (Bird-or-cage) - Friday, 02 November 2018, 13:10 GMT
should I do a full system upgrade to testing or only kernel to check that?

Does the system use any separate packages to provide kernel modules such as nvidia? If not just update the kernel package.
Comment by Mathew (Bird-or-cage) - Friday, 02 November 2018, 13:33 GMT
no kernel modules installed, so I upgraded only kernel
laptop boots fine with linux-4.19.arch1-1, seemingly no issues, but the message "arch kernel: rtsx_pci: probe of 0000:03:00.0 failed with error -110" stays
so the message could be irrelevant to the issue present in linux-4.18.15 and linux-4.18.16

I doubt arch will release another 4.18 based linux package.
If you could find the commit for linux-lts that is causing the issue then you could report that upstream.

Would be nice if you could try linux-lts 4.14.80-1, see if it's fixed there

Tried linux-lts 4.14.80-1, boot freezes, but seemingly a bit later.
With other affected kernels it was after either "[ok] Started udev Kernel Device Manager" or "[ok] Started Flush Journal to Persistent Storage"
With linux-lts 4.14.80-1: I attached the file

  • Field changed: Summary ([linux/linux-lts] boot freeze arch kernel: rtsx_pci: probe of 0000:03:00.0 failed with error -110 → [linux-lts] boot freeze arch kernel: rtsx_pci: probe of 0000:03:00.0 failed with error -110 )
This is already fixed in the linux package
