I think this is more appropriate to be called a Feature
Request rather than a Bug Report (although this contains
some fine-tuning for Arch and small fixes for Linux in
general).
The attachment contains a modified firestarter 1.0.3 package based on firestarter-1.0.3-3. Changes: * depends: - Removed 'syslog-ng', Added 'logger' (syslog-ng, sysklogd, & metalog all provide 'logger') - Bumped minimum version of libgnomeui to 2.16.1 (since firestarter will be rebuilt against the latest GNOME libs if these changes will push through) * Changed URL to http://www.fs-security.com/ * Added firestarter-1.0.3-kernel_log_path.patch (will be explained in detail below) firestarter-1.0.3-kernel_log_path.patch: * firestarter.schemas.in: Set default kernel message log path to /var/log/kernel.log since syslog-ng is the default logger installed (included here instead of invoking sed in the PKGBUILD) * src/logread.c: Check if logpath isn't NULL before trying to open the log file to prevent "libgnomevfs-CRITICAL"-errors * src/util.c: - Added check for guessing log file paths: Initially parse log file to check if it indeed contains the kernel messages - If the default path obtained from the gconf database isn't valid, "guess" the path in this order: syslog-ng (/var/log/kernel.log) first, then sysklogd and metalog (/var/log/kernel) will come second. Of course, syslog-ng will always be checked first because it is _the_ default logger of Arch (correct me if I'm wrong). I hope my changes will be incorporated. The viewing of blocked connections in firestarter-1.0.3-3 doesn't work because the paths are all wrong. My patch fixes that and some other issues I encountered along the way... |

hm, I know I started that me with guessing the pathes, thanks for
finishing the idea. I won't hesitate to incorporate the fixes into
our package but I have a feeling that this code would be better
off in the upstream of firestarter. Do you wanna contact the
upstream maintainers about that? There are more Distros out there
where the paths and preferences are all differently probably.

If you think the patch is just fine then I'll be glad if my patch
gets merged upstream.
