Details

There are simply no controls in amixer for [Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio] (device 1). Pulseaudio works, but this is not optimal.

To be more precise: screenshot is of alsamixer and not amixer, just for example.

If pulse works, this is very likely a setting issue. What have you tried?

I have set alsa as main without pulse being installed, set /etc/libao.conf for strict alsa.
Audio would start with no errors, but alsamixer had no option for volume adjustment.
HDMI audio has no controls, but pulse is able to emulate volume on top of alsa.
HDMI out is the only option for audio. Thank You Doug.
