Did forum suggestions fix this for you?

Yes, but it was a bit vague. These are the steps I took:

uninstalled nvidia-utils
deleted /usr/lib/tls (which only had nvidia libs in - check if this is true first!)
deleted /usr/lib/libGL*
ran the nvidia installer (from nvidia.com) with the --uninstall switch to make sure
reinstalled nvidia-utils
