I guess it's the implementation called th-LuaJSON here, because it's the same link: http://lua-users.org/wiki/JsonModules

Judging by that comparison at least it seems there may be better implementations available.

I asked around a bit, in #lua on freenode.
Recommendations I got there for pure lua json libraries were the following two:
