I can confirm I had the flickering on both 32-bit and 64-bit on i915 and libvirt.
I can confirm that both stopped flickering with the patch.

Upstream apparently rejected this because it breaks wayland. I don't think we should be adding patches which upstream has seen and rejected. Is anyone looking into a proper fix that upstream will accept?

I tested the SVN version https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/abiword-svn/ and there is no
flickering there.

So either we wait for a new release containing the upstream patch or we backport the flickering
fix (if possible) into 3.0.2.

There's a commit to abiword on 2018-06-25 with an entirely different fix, which I've added to the PKGBUILD in the following patch.

If this fixes it for you, we should be using it instead...

EDIT: Oops, v2 patch is the one which wasn't accidentally piped through colordiff.

Tested with the patch applied. The strobing flickering is gone, only light flickering when pressing a key or setting the caret.

After literally years of noticing this bug, the patch pointed to in the original report by Erich Eckner fixes the flickering issue for me.

Retested without the flicker patch with Abiword 3.0.4, the flickering issues seem to have gone in the new version.
Didn't check the upstream changelog though.
