Description:
Nouveau freezes system whenever a hardware acceleration is used.
Running on a Nvidia Geforce 6150SE nForce 430.
Only Workaround is adding "nouveau.noaccel=1" to kernel boot line.

I had similar issue with NVIDIA GK208B [GeForce GT 710] and I solve the issue with:

$ sudo systemctl stop gpm
$ sudo systemctl disable gpm

in console before run startx. In man you can read:

BUGS
The gpm server may have problems interacting with X. if your mouse is a single-open device (i.e. a bus mouse), you should kill gpm before starting X, or use the -R option (see above). To kill gpm just invoke gpm -k. This
problem doesn't apply to serial mice.

Since I stopped and disabled gpm, my xorg has never hanged.
