Details

I installed archlinux yesterday (just the base system!), set my repositories to current, extra and community only, and then did a pacman -Syu to upgrade my whole system. It all works nice, till I reboot. I get a [kernel panic - cannot mount root filesystem] error and it just hangs there.

Are you using lilo or grub?

If you are using lilo, I think you hav to run lilo before rebooting.

If you can get hold of a Live Linux CD, Knoppix etc.
I should help you to fix it.

What about kernel26.img and initrd26.img? This has been changed between the current packages and the 0.7.2 installation CD. The kernel package printed something about the change and if you didn't update grub or lilo config, the wrong initrd is loaded.

Yeah, I had to change grub's conf to point to kernel26.img instead of initrd.img. Now it works fine.
