Actually, the real problem seems to come after:

added 222 packages from 206 contributors in 46.728s
rm: cannot remove '/data/INSTALL/pm2/pkg/pm2/usr/etc': No such file or directory

I assume something in npm's arcane dependency system got updated and no longer requires this workaround:

rm -r "$pkgdir"/usr/etc
