Would it be possible to enable djvu file support in the evince package. I've tried enabling it in a build from ABS and it seems stable for the djvu files I have.

Reason for closing:  Implemented
Additional comments about closing:  Built libdjvu as standalone package so evince can use it.
Add DVI support aswell, since it only adds a makedepend on tetex (libkpathsea is static)

adding djvulibre to the dependency list of evince would add Qt also, which is not an option for a gnome PDF viewer IMHO.

Yes, I see what you mean.

Googling around I notice debian have broken the package into djvulibre-bin, djview, djvulibre-plugin, djvuserve and libdjvulibre1, with only the viewer and plugin dependent on qt.

I think I read somewhere Arch doesn't like to seperate out components from how they are packaged upstream due to the extra packaging and testing involved. If this is the case it's a bit of a catch 22 ...

From http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6095 (closed as duplicate):
djvulibre shouldn't depend on qt (qt is needed for the "sample" djvu-viewer apps only
