i filed a bug report on brasero to gnome.bugzilla.org because i can't burn any type of disc with brasero and the dev told me, after looking at brasero's log, that the kernel has to allow sending scsi commands:

> Hi,
> apparently you should file a bug against your distribution. The problem lies in
> your kernel that forbids to send SCSI commands to the drive. If you look at the
> bug you'll see that cdrecord reports:
> "Operation not permitted. Cannot send SCSI cmd via ioctl".
> That means that cdrecord (used in a command line or via brasero) cannot talk to
> the device.

Are you in the optical group?
Comment by Björn Martensen (baze) - Thursday, 09 November 2006, 20:29 GMT
yes, i am of course.
i wrote that on gnome bugzilla too, but the brasero dev told me this has nothing to do with wrong permissions of the device anyway

does it work as root?

strange, but it does. however it should work for normal users too if they are in the group optical, right? well, that one doesn't.

when working as root, it indicates that it is a permission problem

Is the so-called "capability" kernel module loaded?
Comment by Tobias Powalowski (tpowa) - Friday, 17 November 2006, 14:35 GMT
any progress on this one?
Comment by Björn Martensen (baze) - Saturday, 18 November 2006, 00:43 GMT
oh sorry, i talked to jgc in irc about this and i've tried loading the capability module, but it didn't solve the problem.
we talked a bit about cdrecord and i think the problem is that cdrecord needs root access to work proberly (+s) but i haven't tried +s on cdrecord yet, i will do that though.
but for the progress: it's still the same state here, cd writing with brasero does not yet work correctly.
i have some wrong detection of media with hal too, but that is only with dvd+rw discs, so it shouldn't affect this problem with cdrecord.

could you please test the latest stuff in testing with cdrkit and new udev, thanks

seems to work fine as a normal user without the need of +s
