Since the update to gnome 3.28 I can't input characters
requiring more than 1 button press (like ` + a for à,...) in
the password field using the "German (Austria)" keyboard
layout.

I forgot to mention that it's possible to work around this problem
using the on-screen keyboard.
This debian bugreport seems to be related:

This bug has been fixed (since 3.28.1 I think).
