I would recommend starting a forum thread or seeking help on irc instead of a bug report. Use live media to locate relevant information such as the pacman.log for the upgrade.

Get rid of "quiet" in your kernel command line

I noticed I can go to different TTY and login as my user. I thought this was problem with sddm as I has 100s of errors coming from sddm and sddm-helper but all the issues I found online were from 2016 and early 2017, so it wasn't it. I tried to run sddm-helper --theme /usr/share/sddm/theme/brezze and this command failed with problem with shared libraries, more specifically with libharfbuzz which put me on right tracks. It's a problem with infinality - I saw a thread about it on reddit this week. Removing all `pacaur -Rdd` infinality packages and replacing them with freetype2 let me start sddm-helper from command line.

I found the reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/7uf8qm/latest_update_borked_my_arch_install/
