I've found that some sites (most notably http://mail.yahoo.com) have very bad/small fonts after latest fontconfig's update. This is due to a missing symlink to /etc/fonts/conf.avail/70-no-bitmaps.conf in /etc/fonts/conf.d (after creating this link everything is ok again).

I'm using all default configuration files and no ttf-ms-fonts package (I use dejavu fonts).

Check out if 30-replace-bitmap-fonts.conf is linked into conf.d. This file will replace common bitmap fonts (Helvetica, Times, Courier) with "Sans", "Serif" and "Monospace". Which other bad fonts does yahoo use?

Disabling bitmap fonts completely is not the way to go, there's a decent method to replace the misbehaving fonts with something else.

Yes, 30-replace-bitmap-fonts.conf is linked into conf.d, but the yahoo fonts looked bad anyway. I don't know which fonts they use, really. I thought it was yahoo who changed the fonts, but then while testing Ubuntu I found that the fonts looked fine there, and looking at its conf.d directory I found they have the no-bitmaps.conf linked there (and I guess it was the same with previous versions of fontconfig in Arch, since they looked ok before).

Anyway, I'll try to find a different solution with replace-bitmap-fonts.conf settings and post back if I find out anything new.

Thanks.

You can link the file in there yourself, the package will keep it linked on upgrades.
