Details

if i click on a link in the Archlinux menu of the K menu (which is the purpose of archlinux-menus), i got nothing happening. except the icon bubling on my screen. no konqueror window launched nor any tab opened in my konqueror window

it seems that /usr/bin/htmlview fails to launch konqueror ( and the only other browser i have installed is opera) because i DO NOT HAVE any KDE_SESSION variable set _although_ i am running kde.

i do not use kdm.

fixes suggested to htmlview

1) use another way to detect if kde is running
I have been said in #kde@freenode to check instead for KDE_FULL_SESSION = true

2) include opera as another possible browser

My two cents of euro:
btw why opera is installed in /usr ! that's dumb and stupid. /opt is the natural place especially as firefox and mozilla are already there.
This task depends upon

Reason for closing:  Fixed
Additional comments about closing:  Added xdg-utils to the repositories and made archlinux-menus use it.

upon a little googling, i have find that page about environment variable in KDE: http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-?page=Environment+Variables

so KDE_FULL_SESSION seems to be the variable to use. DESKTOP_SESSION is not even metionnned

but i have also found portland project (helped by Sutoka in #kde@freenode the same one that told me about KDE_FULL_SESSION) that has released xdg-utils.

there are simple scripts and there is xdg-open that would be a better thing to use than htmlview.

so i stronly ;-) suggest you to test and switch to xdg-utils :-DD

xdg-open is not either aware of opera :-(

About xdg-utils and Portland Project: there was topic about this on forums. IIRC it was mentioned there that these utils are not in wide use yet, and not much software make use of them.
Is it worth to use them in Arch _now_, JGC?

winebrowser use xdg-open

more and more will use it. i thought arch was more bleeding edge (and adopt easily new tools) than reactionary.

it's the problem of the egg and the chicken:
if you do not provide them (and use as example in archmenus) as a package noone could use them and they will never be widely used !

at least xdg-open works as advertize not like htmlview !

have you fixed the bug i have filled ?
