I updated to gxine 0.5.8-1 and know I get this error when I try to start it.
It worked fine with 0.5.7.
All the packages on my system are up to date.
I use xfce 4.2 and fglrx graphics driver (Radeon 9800 pro).

The program 'gxine' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
(Details: serial 292 error_code 8 request_code 142 minor_code 5)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Reason for closing:  Not a bug
Additional comments about closing:  Closing this. It is an upstream issue. Try running gxine with different -V command line options.

gxine -V xshm works fine here.

Sorry should be "Packages: Extra"

My guess is that gxine tries to use XV, which isn't implemented in fglrx when used with Xorg 7.1 (good job ATI, you beat nvidia with Xorg 7.1 driver support, but at least nvidia has working XV with their xorg 7.1 drivers that came a week or two later..)
