Details

Description:
1.) Gnome forgets monitor settings upon restart.
2.) The external monitor shuts off when the laptop lid closes.

Additional info:
-Gnome 3.26.1
-Arch Linux
-Thinkpad x250
-Using VGA cable

Steps to reproduce:
1.) Fresh login, connect VGA cable, close lid
2.) Monitor stays on when laptop lid closes
3.) Now open laptop lid, disconnect vga cable and then replug the vga cable.
4.) Close laptop lid. Monitor now shuts off.

Temporary fix:
1.) Logout when reconnected vga cable
2.) Login with vga cable connected
3.) close laptop lid
4.) Monitor stays on

As for gnome forgetting external monitor settings such as screen resolution etc, this is somewhat well known with the gnome 3.26 release. I have to manually specify what to do with the monitor each time I restart and connect vga cable. I also have to manually specify the screen resolutions, positions etc.

I can confirm the bug using DELL XPS 13 on a USB-C connected external monitor using gnome 3.26.1 on Wayland. I worked well with gnome 3.24.

@Mario any luck after recent updates? Still the same situation on my side.

Today I updated my system and I can confirm that the regression is still there. I can't spot any related package (gnome-shell, mutter, ...) update in such list.

The three patches proposed on the upstream bug report (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=788915) worked well for me. Waiting for an upstream patch, they could be included in the Arch Linux mutter package as external patch (there is already one for another bug).
