Have you actually tested it with java 9? It would only prevent upgrade of AUR packages, though.

I have not tested it as I would not want to force it. Java should be backwards compatible, so there should be no issue. If that is all that is needed, I might give it a try. I am using oracle-jdk from AUR and I can not upgrade due to this.

I really don't care about your AUR issues. The packager doesn't use the same packaging method as the official repos, and that's what's causing your problem there. The only question here is if the dep can be upgraded, which is an extremely minor issue.

Edit, as for backwards compatibility, there are many, many times it's not, so assuming it is for something as complex as this is a bad idea.

I am not expecting you to care about AUR issues. I am also not familiar with proper packaging methods, so I can not really comment on what the problem is with AUR package. If you would point it out, I will be happy to report to the maintainer.

Now regarding the Java backwards compatibility, in this case I would be pretty sure that it is OK, since if it was not, there will be like 1000000 people complaining already. :) However, arguing about this makes no sense, so I would test it with official jdk9-openjdk and report back here whether it works or not.

Tried it and it does not work. You were right.
