DetailsAlsa-lib builds by default in "debug mode", which means that assertions are compiled in by default. I think the standard practice for Arch is not to build in debug mode by default.
Besides, any program that triggers an assertion in alsa-lib will crash immediately, which is quite annoying. This happened before with ring-daemon: it triggered a mostly harmless assertion in alsa-lib and crashed. When rebuilding alsa-lib without assertions, everything worked fine. The default can be seen from ./configure --help output: --with-debug library will be compiled with asserts (default = yes) It is enough to add "--without-debug" to the ./configure invocation.
