Detailskdelibs in testing contains a katepart-bug that makes kate and friends to crash if first line in a file is empty. The fix is in kde svn tagged as kde 3.5.5, so a svn up and recompile should do it.

KDE is not yet officially released, I will package the new reference tarball which has been made available to package maintainers. It's building right now. :)
