DetailsWhen you use startx, xauth creates a file containing an "MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE". The magic cookie should go into a file called .Xauthority. The startx script checks an environment variable called XENVIRONMENT for the filename; if it's not set to something else, it defaults to $HOME/.Xauthority. Instead of using this file, xauth creates $HOME/.serverauth.$$ and uses that instead. These files are cleaned up only if X properly exits.
