Can't reproduce. The version in extra has this problem, the version in testing works fine.

this isn't critical, it doesn't blow up your system. lose data or such.
you just can't start a simple app.

On my system I have vte 0.14.1-1 fromt testing and this package doesn't contain libvte.so.4 . Moreover version in testing and extra have the same number.

Brice is right about the versioning. The reason why grip didn't work for him was because pacman didn't upgrade it: the versions are the same.

I still get this problem after the testing -> current/extra move. I have the latest grip and vte:
grip 3.3.1-4
vte 0.14.1-1

I seems that grip need to be rebuilt against the newest vte.
