Gnome-settings-daemon errors are rearing their ugly head,

No, you just need to start your dbus session bus from within X,
not outside X. This patch won't apply, as it applies to bonobo
code, which is no longer there. control-center 2.16 doesn't do
per-display registration AFAIK.
