Hi there after an update via pacman -Syu the system doesn't come up again!
GRUB will be loaded and then the kernel complains about the root file system:

No filesystem could mount root, tried:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)

any solutions for this?

regards,

Frank

did you know mkinitrd is a goner ?

change your boot loader to load kernel26.img as initrd

Hi arjan,
guten Morgen Tobias,

well I've performed just the standard way of upgrading and answered Y if there was the question about upgrading to mkinitcpio. Well I didn't type Y I typed nothing because I wanted to accept the default which is "Y"

You mean to change the bootloader this way ?
editing grub.conf to have the line
initrd /boot/kernel26.img

If this is the cause for my problem, please tell me why won't this be done by the upgrade process?

Well I have access to this system today afternoon. I will post a message if I have done the suggested change.

regards,

Frank

The hint has been announced in the post_install for kernel26 2.6.17, the hint is actually done in the post_install for 2.6.18 and it has been announced on forums, mailinglists, irc and the newspage for a long while. Enough hints I would say.

Hi there,

system is up and running again (thanks to knoppix, I had to remount with option rw the partition) using the tip from Tobias. Maybe this hint will find a way to the archlinux documentation for the upgrade to kernel 2.6.18

regards,

Frank
