Although there's a package for Dejavu in community, actually using it as a replacement for Bitstream Vera doesn't work without jumping some hoops because the commonly installed ttf-ms-fonts takes precedence over it. Could you consider patching /etc/fonts/fonts.conf to mention DejaVu as an option?

Dejavu will replace bitstream vera in a while in archlinux, and so the fontconfig configuration will use it instead of bitstream vera in the near future.

Please also move ttf-freefont and ttf-linux-libertine to Current or Extra.
IMHO it would be better to add all major fonts ina all repos to fonts.conf?

fontconfig 2.4 comes with many changes in conf.d/ files, so it would be nice if these fonts could put a file there. I don't know how it works yet, have to take a look at it.

Wow, didn't know that fontconfig 2.4 will be so soon. Hmm... wouldn't there be same big problems as with fontconfig 2.2?

Oops, it seems I confused fontconfig with freetype. :-/

I sent a revised pkgbuild to Dejavu's maintainer that does exactly this, put a configuration file in conf.d that adds Dejavu first in the list of preferred fonts. (Unfortunately he rejected it). If other fonts would do the same, the order of preference would be determined by the order these files are included. Have a look if you like.

Why not defien font order in local.conf like what we did the old days? For example:

DejaVu Serif faces
-->
<alias>
<family>DejaVu DejaVu Serif</family>
<family>WenQuanYi Bitmap Song</family>
<family>AR PL New Sung</family>
<family>AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni</family>
