This is what gvim looks like when I start it:

As you can see, it is quite unreadable. It is also not the "default" color set, which is default for vim on the CLI, and should be default for gvim.

This also happens to me (current/gvim 7.0.118-1) and nothing I write in .vimrc can fix it. Setting a colorscheme only changes the foreground, not the annoying white background. BUT, when I change it under gvim itself everything goes nicely and the background changes.

... fixed. ;)
Arch's gvim does not override /etc/gvim with ~/.vimrc, instead it uses ~/.gvimrc.

Thanks, that fixed it. Doesn't fix /etc/gvim not having sane defaults though...

Hi,

/etc/gvimrc is heavily oudated. Either remove, or replace by /usr/share/vim/vimrc_example.vim

DO NOT keep this configuration for the sake of your distro's reputation.

I've attached a patch wich remove the offending colorization-lines in the /etc/gvimrc and
replaced them with something friendlier. Nevertheless I would suggest to simply delete
/etc/gvimrc, provide a sane /etc/vimrc and offer some nice examples for gvimrc's in
/usr/share/vim

regards,

Assigned to neri.

Gvim should still read /etc/vimrc just fine. Would you (neri) be against just removing gvimrc?

I deleted all my ~/.(g)vim* stuff and /etc/vimrc but I still get a light background in gvim. It doesn't look as bad as in the screenie but still not the way vim looks like!
I'm not against deleting /etc/gvimrc but it didn't make a difference on my system ...

Thoughts?

I'm ssh-based right now, I'll look into it when I get home

I guess with the removal of the files this issue is resolved?
