If I enter my password incorrectly for three times, the forth attempt causes the gdm greeter session to freeze. I'm not sure if this is the result of local arch linux pam policy (I'm not 100% sure of the terminology).
By the way, if I fail three times to log in from a tty, the getty process resets. Maybe this could be a hint.
I've reported this upstream
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=757259
But I felt I should report here as well in case this is Arch Linux specific.
Thank you.

cat /etc/pam.d/passwd
#%PAM-1.0
#password required pam_cracklib.so difok=2 minlen=8 dcredit=2 ocredit=2 retry=3
#password required pam_unix.so sha512 shadow use_authtok
password required pam_unix.so sha512 shadow nullok

https://linux.die.net/man/8/pam_cracklib
says:
retry=N
Prompt user at most N times before returning with error. The default is 1.
