With last Firefox update (52) (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/52.0/releasenotes/):
Removed support for Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI) plugins other than Flash. Silverlight, Java, Acrobat and the like are no longer supported.

The plugin for Gnome Shell is affected too.

Additional comments about closing:  From upstream:
"The plugin in the gnome-shell source tree is on life support until the extension integration in Software is fully up to par, then it will be removed. It is definitively not going to be updated to a completely different browser API."
