Seems to be GTK related because others report that it works fine for lxde. (See https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=223424)

Which theme is used on your system?

I was using 'numix' but also tried othes like 'Adweita','Clearlooks' or default 'Xfce'. No difference. Hope this was meant by theme. Otherwise please explain which theme you mean.

"cannot register existing type 'GdkDisplay'" means mixing of GTK2 and GTK3 in the same process.

Thinking about the theme stuff, this can't be caused by your theme as GTK3 doesn't support theme engines anymore. This is probably a plugin or extension that links against GTK2.

Plugins...Good point. Thank you.
Actually it was a plugin called firetray (http://foudfou.github.io/FireTray/) I had installed. I had to remove the plugin in the old version (45.7.1-1) and then upgrade to 45.7.1-2 and now thunderbird starts correctly.
Now I also have the problem as described in  FS#53046  (https://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?do=details&task_id=53046) but thats another story. Thank you again.
