A I replied to you in the Email:
the gimp packag does contain a .desktop file, whichs Changelog says:
http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/gimp/data/misc/gimp.desktop.in.in?hideattic=0&rev=1.15&view=log
that the Application part got removed due to changing standards, It seems the Gnome guys have to rewrite their menu code.

I changed the same part in my gimp.desktop file from gimp from testing, but it does still appear in my application menu.

Also, the filelist on the website says there's a .desktop file in the gimp package, while you state it's missing...

This does indeed work me for in gimnp 2.2.13
I even did a 'rm ~/.local' to avoid any customizations and the gimp menu item is still there.
